British Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method
The certification system BREEAM (British Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method) from the UK has been established by the Building Research Establishment (BRE).
It assesses the following categories:
- Energy
- Health and Wellbeing
- Innovation
- Land Use and Ecology
- Materials
- Management
- Pollution
- Transport
- Waste
- Water
Two versions of the core system exist; one is intended for the UK, the other one for international assessments. It allows the certification of the following building types:
- Residential
- Offices
- Industrial
- Retail
- Education (Schools, Universities, etc.)
- Residential institutions (Long term stay)
- Hotels and Residential institutions (Short term stay)
- Non-standard building types (Theatre, Cinema, Prison, etc.)
Buildings are awarded “acceptable” (< 30%, in-use scheme only), “pass” (30%), “good” (45%), “very good” (55%), “excellent” (70%) or “outstanding” (85%).
