British Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method

The BREEAM (British Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method) certification system, which originated in the UK, was introduced by the Building Research Establishment (BRE).

The following categories are evaluated:

  • Energy
  • Health and Wellbeing
  • Innovation
  • Land Use and Ecology
  • Materials
  • Management
  • Pollution
  • Transport
  • Waste
  • Water

The core system is available once for the UK and once for international use. The following building types can be certified with it:

  • Residential
  • Offices
  • Industrial
  • Retail
  • Education (Schools, Universities, etc.)
  • Residential institutions (Long term stay)
  • Hotels and Residential institutions (Short term stay)
  • Non-standard building types (Theatre, Cinema, Prison, etc.)

Buildings can be awarded Acceptable (< 30%, In-Use scheme only), Pass (30%), Good (45%), Very Good (55%), Excellent (70%) or Outstanding (85%).
