Assessment system for sustainable building (BNB)

The Assessment System for Sustainable Building(BNB) of the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Building and Nuclear Safety is structured analogously to the DGNB certification system. Buildings can be awarded bronze (50%), silver (65%) or gold (80%).

For which building types is BNB certification suitable?

There are different usage profiles for the certification of:

  • Office and administration buildings (new construction, existing buildings/complete modernization, use and operation)
  • Outdoor facilities of federal properties
  • Classroom building (new building)
  • Laboratory building (new building)

Award criteria for BNB certification

The following categories are evaluated:

  • Ecological quality
  • Economic quality
  • Socio-cultural and functional quality
  • Technical quality
  • Process quality
  • Location quality

BNB Certification Body

Recognized certification bodies include the German Sustainable Building Council(DGNB) and other authorized organizations accredited by the Federal Ministry of Housing, Urban Development and Building(BMWSB).

Costs for BNB certification

The costs for BNB certification vary depending on the size and complexity of the project. The cost of the registration fee is between 1,500 and 10,000 euros and depends on the type and size of the project. The certification fees vary greatly and are often between 4,000 and 10,000 euros. The exact amount depends on the size of the project and the complexity of the criteria to be evaluated. Additional costs may also be incurred for advice from certified auditors, the preparation of necessary documentation and the performance of interim assessments.
